Controller - Spence Engineering
 
JOB FUNCTION / PURPOSE
The Controller is a direct report to the General Manager. As a leadership team member, the successful candidate will partner with other staff members to execute the financial commitments of the business.


Responsible for the direction and control of the Finance department, and all directly related activities. Leadership includes:
recruiting, developing, training, coaching, goal and performance management.
The hands-on individual will analyze business metrics / trends and drive people and process improvements.

PRINCIPAL ACTIVITIES / RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Preparation, understanding and explaining monthly reporting on performance-to-plan, forecast and prior year.

2. Analyze production variances, product line margin analysis, order status, cost reductions, inventory and other related metrics.

3. Maintain and where necessary strengthen internal controls over financial reporting and safeguarding of company assets and implement fast improvements.

4. Implement timely corrective actions with management to avoid issues and capitalize on opportunities.

5. Develop and sustain inventory reporting including quality of inventory metrics.

6. Participate in operational teams to improve profit and asset turn performance.

7. Coordinate any audit activities with external audit firms.

DUTIES
1. Develop, in collaboration with the General Manager and other Executive Staff Members, the annual operating budget.
2. Establish the objectives, procedures, and requirements for department managers to make capital expenditure recommendations for their departments; investigate and approve these requests and submit annual capital expenditure budget and specific recommendations to the General Manager for final approval.
3. Actively participate in the long range planning of Leslie Controls supporting and positively contributing to that effort.
4. Participate as a member of the Executive Committee in the development of short and long range goals, personnel policies, and programs of the company.
5. Investigate and recommend requests for capital expenditures for the department.
6. Attend management conferences and training programs. Maintain expertise in the latest trends and improvements in the field of lean manufacturing, through appropriate publications and outside affiliations.
7. Foster a close relationship between finance and manufacturing departments, quality assurance, engineering, customer service, and marketing to ensure good coordination and effectiveness.
8. Provide guidance to subordinates to develop their performance standards. Develop controls and measurements to assure that these standards are met.
9. Perform related duties assigned or as responsibilities necessitate.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND COMPETENCIES
Education:

• Bachelor Degree in Accounting; CMA or CPA a plus.
• Knowledge of Mapics or like systems
• Increasing accounting responsibility in a manufacturing environment with experience in cost and inventory accounting.
• Sarbanes-Oxley Section 404 regulations
• Experience in inter-company and multi-currency transactions.
• Lean manufacturing and multiple manufacturing plants a plus

Experience:
8-10 years experience within a manufacturing environment.
